Forum Marketing - Tips #1 - Nickname

As promised, this month, I will post tips on marketing your website through forum. You know what, forum is a good way to introduce yourself, to build up your reputation and the most important is to get people click on your links and to get SALES!

OK first of all, it seems like everyone knows about forum, right? So I hope I don’t have to explain what forum is. hehe. Forumers are like your neighbours, roommates, housemate, friends and more of a big family. A good forumer will always help each other, asking, answering, helping, etc. When you keep on helping, mostly newbie, trust me, your reputation will increase without you even noticed. (only if you don’t check your awstats :P)

Enough for intro, so let’s move on to my first secret, the NICKNAME.

Yes, names must be simple and easy to remember. It doesn’t only apply on domain names, but also nickname.

Let’s see some sample, shall we?

bitol vs feast_silver
najmi vs k_req1985

Which one do you prefer most? Which are the ones that are easier to remember? I would say bitol & najmi, because it contains less alphabets and easier to pronounce.

Other examples includes shuth (www.mohdsuhaimy.com), and kidino (www.moneyclicking.net).

You also can use your website name as your nickname. In this case, I think it is another way to promote your website, so it gives double impact! Examples? These forumers go by their domain name - saifulsham (www.saifulsham.com), smartusaha (www.smartusaha.com). But remember that not all domain name is suitable for a nickname, it depends on the purpose of the website as well. Wouldn’t it be weird if you found a forumer by the name cheapestcovers? Exactly. :)

So, my personal recommendations are;
1. Choose a good nickname - which is simple and easy to remember
2. Build your reputation by helping other forumers (post as frequently as you can)
3. Get to know other forumers and join the committee.

Hmmm, then my nickname is Robotys! Hehehe, the name is unique by itself (”Robot” alone is unique for a living being nickname :) ). But i like your nick, “Bitol” . How you get that really unique nick? (It sounds like shouting the word “Betul” in kinda cute way). Any particular stories to share? :)

He he such a nostalgic story.
During secondary school, people kept on “ejek”-ing father’s name.
So for me, Hafiz Latib.

Latib ==> Bital ==> Bitol

He he. Never mind about that, seems now people keeps on calling me bitol.

So Robotys, what the “ys” stand for?

Ha… now I know why people call you Bitol… but I’ll stick with Hafiz la…

Another tip… if you don’t have a nickname to brand yourself on the net, don’t be afraid to use your real name. The problem with real name is that there could be people with the same name as yours, but if your name is unique enough, that’s a huge plus in branding yourself and your business eventually.

Huhu…why did I choose this nickname?
Well, at the time I was busy on the internet, I thought it’d be a great idea to use the nickname Galadriel, as she is the wise elf lady in the Lord of the Rings - which happens to be one of my favourite book and movie(s) of all time…
Some people know my real name, some don’t, but normally in forums I use this nickname. It’s only in my main websites / emails that i use my real name because it’s more professional to do so…

Yeah, the trick is to know when to use your real name or nick name based on the situation.

I’m rarely being called Najmi anymore (people call me Jiman - anagram of Najmi), but I still have to use my real name for this blog and C3 - for the sake of looking professional.

Hehe, how about me? I actually don’t know why I choose smartusaha for my nick name for certain forum and also for my website.

Actually, when I want to buy domain name last year, I only stick with this domain name every day and don’t have another name in my mind. So difficult to find anothers name.. So, lastly I just register that domain name and use it for my nickname too.

Do you know guys? More person call me smartusaha than smartzul.. Ahaks, never mind.. Smartusaha is also have a good meaning right? Usaha yang Smart.. Hmm, how about the person? Also smart too? hahaha…
